The Portland Building Enclosure Council is pleased to announce the 2024 Symposium. This year’s Symposium will focus on building enclosures responding to a changing climate.
The symposium is a full day event, comprised of presentations, speakers, and opportunities for sidebar conversations.

Session 1 - Climate Positive Enclosures

With a focus on building enclosure performance, this panel will explore the collaborative role of building professionals in addressing climate change in the built environment. We will provide an overview of climate impacts and opportunities, including both operational and embodied carbon emissions, to help practitioners understand the scale of impact of different aspects of enclosure design over time. We will map out a process, including tools and other resources for identifying the relative magnitude of impact to help practitioners understand priorities and focus efforts.

Session 2 - The Path to a Net Zero Envelope

Advances in Vacuum Insulated glazing (VIG) will be a game changer for the retrofit market. This session looks at current processes and the path to integratinge new VIG products into existing buildings including a case study on the adaptive reuse of the exterior envelope with single pane retrofit using VIG as a replacement.

Session 3 - All of the Above - Unburdening Overburden

This session will review how roofing overburden of different kinds can be used to realize the potential of previously underutilized exterior enclosure areas and make a significant impact on the sustainability goals of a building. Proper selection criteria for a complementary roofing membrane system will also be discussed.

Session 4 - Top 10 Unknown Enclosure Requirements

There are numerous requirements of almost all enclosure projects that many in the industry do not know about. In reviewing these items, the goal is to give actionable steps that are simple and effective to address these requirements. Additionally, eight enclosure tactics will be discussed that have been measured (not estimated) to save significant time and fees in other Architecture firms. These are scalable and simple ideas that can be tuned to various delivery methods and projects.

Session 5 - PDX Airport Main Terminal Expansion Curtain Wall

The session will cover the design and installation of the PDX Airport Main Terminal Expansion curtain wall from the perspective of the glazing subcontractor. Technical details are presented in chronological order to explain the evolution of the design from the original proposal to the final shop drawings. There will be an additional focus on the aluminum extruding process, mockups, and site installation.

This presentation focuses on the process of designing building envelopes with embodied carbon in mind. It will cover what design decisions life cycle analysis can help inform — everything from material selection, supplier comparisons, and assembly vs. whole building analysis considerations.
